Where possible, links are always styled using the universally recognisable blue underline.


  • Underline links
  • Check colour contrast ratios between background and text
  • Make them visually different from normal text (e.g. a different colour and font weight)
  • Use different colours or shades for visited links vs unvisited links.
  • Use descriptive copy, e.g. "read the Direct Debit guarantee"


  • Don't use generic copy, e.g. "click here"
  • Don't add hyperlinks to full sentences
